to expose the darkness

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. ~Ephesians 5:11

Today is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. In church last night, our pastor referred to this verse and I knew I had to use it for this post.

Today is not only a day for reflection, but a day for action. And that is just what I'm doing. I'm taking action.

Paul writes in Ephesians that we are not only to not take part in works of darkness, but we are also called to expose them.

abor-tion noun \ə-ˈbȯr-shən\
1: the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus

Since the day that Roe v Wade was passed in this country, January 22, 1973, over 50 million abortions have taken place. Last year, over 1 million abortions were performed, around the corner from where you work, in your neighborhood, down the street from your child's school.

That means, over the past 40 years, over 50 million little boys and little girls were killed in their mother's womb. Destroyed. Murdered. Gone.

They will never have life here on earth. They "will never laugh,
never sing,
never experience the joy of human love;
nor will they strive to heal the sick,
or feed the poor, or
make peace among nations"

They will never grow up to be scientists,
and sisters.

50 million lives full of potential. Gone.

As Christians, we cannot stand idly by. We cannot sit on our hands. We cannot claim ignorance. We must expose the darkness.

*Know the facts and statistics about abortion.

*Know when life begins, according to both science and scripture.

*Know prenatal development

*Know the truth about the nation's largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood (324,008 abortions performed in 2010) and it's founder Margaret Sanger.

*Know how legalized abortion affects child abuse rates.

*Know what you can do about it:

You can pray.
You can give (you can also find your local pregnancy center to give in your community).
You can adopt.
You can volunteer.
You can tell people what you know.
You can start a student group on your campus to help pregnant students.
You can advocate.
You can open up your home to a pregnant woman who has nowhere else to go.
You can bake cupcakes.
There are a thousand ways to get involved. But you have to do something.

Proverbs 31:8 says this: Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.

Who among us is more desitute and has a quieter voice than a babe in the womb? Who is weaker and more helpless than a baby who has no voice and cannot fight for herself? (destitute: lacking in resources)

If you have a free 30 minutes, I ask you to watch this video. It will change your view on this topic, no matter where you stand right now.

Please know: If abortion is a part of your past, there is always recovery, hope and reconciliation for you in Christ. "No one is cut off from Christ because of past sin - any past sin... For the repentant there is forgiveness and cleansing and hope." ~John Piper.

1 John 1:9 says:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Today and everyday, let us pray for our nation, pray for those who carry this sin and need healing, pray for those who are considering abortion, pray for the repentence of abortionists, pray for our President and legislators as they make decisions regarding abortion and let us stand up to expose this darkness and injustice.

  1. WOW!!!!!!!!!! I had NO idea a fetus is so developed at 8 weeks...this is a beautiful post thank you for sharing your heart!

    1. It's amazing isn't it?! The heart begins beating just 21 days after conception. Brain waves can be measured at 6 weeks! And by 8 weeks most babies are sucking their thumbs. The sad thing though is that many, if not most, abortions take place after 8 weeks. And so many try to deny that these little tiny humans are babies. Our culture is crazy!

  2. GIRL!!!!! thank you for sharing these TRUTHS. the Lord has laid this topic on my heart so strongly is very serious and i believe most christians do not stand and educate themselves in this area.

this is a BEAUTIFUL post. wow.
i'm going to share it with my followers on facebook & twitter, people need to HEAR these truths. thank you for being bold!

    1. Thank you! This is an issue that the Lord has layed heavy on my heart since I was a teenager. I will always stand up and shout loud for the sanctity of human life. We cannot sit back and do nothing as a holocaust takes place, legally, in our own country. Our children's children will look back and ask, "what were they thinking? why didn't they do anything?" I want to be able to say that I did something :)

  3. we talked about this YESTERDAY in church! thanks for sharing your courageous heart!

    1. I'm so glad to hear that your pastor will preach this from the pulpit!! Too many pastors remain quiet and the church is ignorant on this topic as a result. 1 in 7 women who abort are evangelical Christians!! It breaks my heart that they don't know the truth.

  4. I am just sobbing right now. Thank you for sharing this. I want to be a part of this movement. I want to get involved. I'm going to.

  5. WOW. I totally stumbled on your blog for a reason. I have been so busy working that I haven't had a chance to write a post on my blog about SOHLS! Can I link to yours? It's perfect! I wouldn't change a thing. Thank you for your boldness. I happen to be a staff member at a crisis pregnancy center. I get applications weekly from solid Christians that say they do not believe in abortion except in cases of...Such a shame that many Christians have not been educated on those 'cases' where they would deem abortion to be okay. I had a guy call in today saying that he and his g/f went to PP to have an abortion but for some reason they showed them the ultrasound (doesn't usually happen) and they changed their mind! Praise God! He did some research on clinics and came to us tonight! We had the chance to place a Bible in each of their hands and pray with them as we offered all of the help and resources they need to be parents. I love what I do. Thank you for this post! I look forward to following you.

  6. Hi, Jessi! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your heart's passion. It's so wonderful to read about what affects other bloggers personally or what inspires them to give to others, whether it be time, money, or knowledge.

Thank you for joining the link-up with Em and I today!

  7. Keep in mind that before RvW there were no fewer abortions, just less records kept because women had to have it done in secret, often in scary circumstances. I leave the decisions on this subject to the women who have to make them.

  8. Hi Jessi,
Thanks so much for joining the link-up!
It is very sad that so many mothers are in these situations. I believe in the old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." The more we can focus on prevention and education about safe sex practices, the less we end up in ugly situations where babies are unwanted.

I appreciate your sharing a cause that's important to you!

  9. LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!! Abortion just breaks my heart. I could go on and on about it. Thank you so much for sharing!

  10. wow that video was incredible. I couldn't believe how many people had not heard of Hitler. That's scary. And I love how he helped people see the truth of what happens when a baby is aborted. Thanks for sharing!

  11. Are you aware that there were far more abortions before Roe V. Wade, and many more lives of women lost? Women are people too. Once again, there is a reason that scientists call that a zygote. Your religion is not law. If you wish to live in a place where your religion is the law, you are free to relocate to the middle east. It works so well for them!

  12. Anon- First of all, I would appreciate it if you didn't hide your identity so that I could address you by your name.

Please note that no where in this post did I suggest that Roe V Wade should be repealed and that abortion should be made illegal. My hope is that it becomes unthinkable. But since that is how you've chosen to argue:

The bogus assertion about all those women dying from abortions in back alleys has been disproven. Please cite your source for that one. The cofounder of NARAL, Bernard Nathanson, has admitted to fabricating the numbers of both abortions taking place, and the number of women dying from them before 1973. He notes that 200-250 women died from illegal abortions each year, even though they were reporting 10,000. Here is the article:

In fact, a brand new study out of Chile shows that maternal mortality rates are actually LOWER when abortion is illegal. Meaning, its safer for women when abortion is illegal. Here is the study:

And I absolutely agree with you that "women are people too". I am a women, of course I believe that! But what about 50% of the babies who are aborted who are women? And the right of a women not to be pregnant does not outweigh a baby's right to life; to be born . The right to life is the foundational right in our country. Without it, no other rights can be claimed or enjoyed!

And yes, scientists call zygotes zygotes, and fetuses fetuses and infants infants. That does not make them less human. I have to ask, since you seem to be so enlightened, what constitutes humanity? When does an embryo, zygote, fetus, infant become a human being? If it's not at conception, when all human DNA is present, determining eye color, height, and some personality, is it 21 days later when the heart begins to beat? Is it at 6 weeks when brain waves can be measured and these babies are dreaming? Is it at 9 weeks when genitals are formed and visible? Is it at 12 weeks when the digestive glands are completely formed and able to function?

"It doesn't look like a human" doesn't stand. Neither does "they are not viable outside of the womb". You aren't viable at the north pole without clothes. Does that make you less of a human being? Besides, my 16 month old is not viable without me right now, should I be allowed to abort him? And slaves were considered to not be "persons" simply because they looked different.

Yes, this post was a call to Christians to stand up for life in the womb and yes I used scripture to show that God cares and so should we. But my religion doesn't dictate why I believe abortion is wrong; why embryos, zygotes, fetuses are human beings. I believe that because science has shown it to be so. I believe it because every single human life deserves the chance to live.

I believe in the freedom of religion in this country, not for one single religion to dictate the laws of all. I understand the consitution and the purpose behind the first ammendent. I believe in it and I stand behind it.
