vote if you want

Okay so I joined in and decided to add myself to this Circle of Moms thing. I thought it would be an easy way to document Isaac's growth and milestones. Then I saw that they have this Top 25 blogs thing, so I figured I'd add myself to that too.

So, vote for me if you want. Just for fun...

to save some money

Now that we are officially out of the military and Ben is working in the civilian world and going back to school, we have to be very good about budgeting and spending less money. We were so used to having a nice sized paycheck twice a month and had come to live very comfortably (like 6 blocks from the beach, eating out multiple times a week comfortably). Maybe we need to rethink this moving to Texas on our own thing??

Anyways, I've been slowly easing into the coupon thing (some of those ladies are a little nuts, right??). This week I went to Target determined to save more with coupons than I spent. And I did it!

Here are some of my purchases and savings with coupons:

ALL laundry detergent
Marked down to $7.99 - $7 coupon (thanks mom!) = $0.99

Huggies Little Swimmers
Marked down to $9.99 - $1.50 coupon - $2 coupon = $6.49 + FREE sunblock

(2) Reach Floss
$0.97 each - $1 coupon = FREE

Aquafresh kids toothbrush
Marked down to $1.66 - $1 coupon = $0.66

Nivea Body Wash
Marked down to $3.04 - $3 coupon = $0.04

Total spent: $17.50 + tax
Total saved: $27.28

Have you gotten any awesome deals lately??

a wedding anniversary

7 years ago today my husband and I stood in front of our family and closest friends and vowed to one another that we would love and honor each other for a lifetime.

Look at us! We were just kids!.. no really, we were.

Oh my gosh.. 7 years. I wish I could write about how perfectly blissful marriage is; how much of a fairytale we live in, but we all know that's not how it works. And really, I don't want to write about that because that's boring.

Marriage is hard, it's work, it's arduous, demanding and exhausting. You have to be selfless, willing to compromise and serve one another. There's patience, humility, and kindness involved.

But it's amazing. It's incredible to look back over the past 7 years and see how we got through it together.. to see how far we've come, together. We've encountered some tough obstacles in our 7 years together, but we did it, together. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

And you know what happens when you work so hard for something, like your marriage? You are even more willing to fight for it, to sacrifice in it. And that's where I am. I'm willing to do anything for this marriage because I gave my word. I've poured my heart into it. I've poured my heart into my husband. And I love him. I love that man.

Okay, so my husband is going to kill me for doing this, but I just wanted to share some of my favorite love notes he's sent or left me or things he's said to me over the past 7 years, because, well, he loves me too:

just wanted you to know that i am hopelessly and desperately in love with you and all your beauty. you are the love of my life and i cant imagine it with out you...

you are crazy but for a lot of reasons. all of them i love.

you are the bestest wife ever and i cant believe how blessed i am to have you in my life. i love you so much and think about you every day without ceasing...

every night i fall asleep to the thought of you laying next to me. so every day i wait to sleep and dream of you again. (while he was deployed to Bahrain)

{one year anniversary}

{sixth year anniversary}

Happy 7th Anniversary love!!

friday wrap-up

We did a lot of thrift shopping this week. Everyone was having sales because it's earth day today. I couldn't pass it up! (Okay, I'm going to admit it here and now, with you as my witness.. I might have a problem. Like, I might be addicted to thrifting. But that's better than being addicted to say, Saks right??)

Anyways, here's some things I enjoyed this week...

these shoes are incredible!
i ordered these monthly stickers to document Isaac's growth
we started working on one of these, but a Nevada one
if only i had time to decorate my porch
this iis a great craft for earth day, or any day
it's may be friday, but sunday's comin'!!
love her style
i wish i lived in Virginia right about now
how beautiful is this bride? and her dress!!
i inched along in this book.. i am so far behind on my reading for the year
these photos of Oceanside made me miss home..

because tomorrow is earth day

My husband and I are not "greenies". We don't believe in global warming (yes, we are those people.. don't hate me).

But, we do believe in being resourceful. We do agree that it's a waste to be wasteful. We do believe in saving money on our electric bill and in other ways. We do believe that God created this earth and have called us to be stewards of all that He's made.

And for those reasons, we do reduce, reuse and recycle.

And let me just say, I really don't like the idea of glorifying the earth. We need to glorify the One who made it! "For by Him [Jesus] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth.. all things were created by Him and for Him. ~Col 1: 16. Romans 1:24,25 reminds us that it is a lie to worship the created.. we need to worship the Creator.

So, because tomorrow is earth day I thought I'd share some things around our house that are recycled or reused.

Isaac's bouncy chair was a $2 purchase from a garage sale. I LOVE this thing and so does he. It's probably one of the best purchases I've made for him and we have certainly gotten our money's worth out of it (and more!)

We found this dresser/shelf thing on Craigslist along with Isaac's dresser. It was ugly, like U-G-L-Y blue and white. Ben stripped it (and uncovered layer after layer of old paint), sanded it and stained it. He also put new knobs on it and it has to be my favorite piece of furniture. We use it as a buffet table.

Most of our books are thrift shop finds. I figure it makes more sense to buy old used books rather than buy brand new ones. We both also have Kindles and read several books that way.

ALOT of Isaac's clothes (and mine) are hand-me-downs or thrifted. I love buying his clothes used because they are so stinkin' cheap! Most thrift shops have sales (like 50% off blue tags) and since their kids clothes are already so inexpensive it's like stealing because they end up being so cheap!

We also cloth diaper part time.. mostly while we're at home. But even just that saves money and waste. And some of our diapers are recycled t-shirts.

We bought our washer and dryer used. I also try and do as much laundry in cold water as possible to save on energy costs.

And just because I'm a huge Jack Johnson fan, here's a song for you to enjoy:

How does your family do to reduce, reuse and recycle?

weekend in photos

Ben was up in Oklahoma this weekend for work (doesn't that just sound weird??)

Isaac and I just hung out. We took some naps:

We layed around on the floor:

And I worked on our photo collage. I've been collecting black frames from thrift shops and I also bought a couple at Michael's this weekend because they're having a frame sale. This is what we have so far:

How was your weekend??

friday wrap-up: texas edition

We've been in Texas now for almost a month. That means I've had at least a little time (in between unpacking, decorating, cleaning, cooking and taking care of a newborn) to explore this area.

Over the past month...

*I found this awesome thrift store
*we visited Gateway Church and The Village Church
*I've been looking for a cute and affordable pair of these
*we've been trying to figure out how to pronounce this restaurant's name (it looks like "any hoe" to us)
*Isaac has been rolling over:

*I've been reading this book and it's awesome
*I found this photo album for $3 at Goodwill! (I have a baby blue one for Isaac)
*We still want to visit the Stockyards, the zoo, this art museum, this antique store (and lots of others)
*I found out about this birth center just around the corner from our apartment.. we are hoping to use it for our next birth

I hope you had a great week!!

Take some time to enjoy where you live this weekend. We'll be doing some more exploring around these parts.

fun with the web cam

I've had this web cam since Ben was deployed to Afghanistan. Yes, it took 5 deployments for us to figure out that he could skype home. We're so old fashioned that we usually just hand write letters and when he gets the chance, he'll call. Not to mention, he was in such a remote area that the internet connection was terrible!

But back to what I was saying. I have this web cam and I just realized that I can take fun pictures with it. So, that's what Isaac and I did today. How fun. We will definitely be doing this more often.

Hope you're having a great Thursday!!

my new mirror

Ever since we moved in (okay so for like 3 weeks now...) I've been looking for something to fill this space:

The other day I came across a resale/antique shop (apparently they are everywhere in Texas, yay!) right down the street that I decided to just run in and check out. I found a few mirrors that I thought would look really good over the fireplace but wanted my husband to see them first before I made a decision. A couple days later he went back with me and we came home with this one:

I have always wanted a big gold-framed antique-y mirror so I'm pretty excited about this one.

What do you think??

friday wrap-up

Friday wrap-ups have been a bit of a hiatus due to a big move! (and a new baby :)

This week has been a good one. We're settling into our new apartment more and more each day. It's been a little challenging getting everything set up just because a lot of our pieces were either made or purchased specifically for our old space. But we're making due and things are coming together! Next week I'll share our new place by doing a tour of each room.

This week...

*we FINALLY got to visit this church.. we've been podcasting Matt Chandler for over a year and it was exciting to get to hear him in person

*Isaac thoroughly enjoyed his bouncy seat (best $2 I ever spent!):

*I laughed so hard at Megyn Kelly's top 5- what not to say to a pregnant woman

*I introduced Isaac to the Aquabats

I also thought it would be fun to share with you some of the series I've been enjoying this week:

*this birth story series at us three birds has been great

*I LOVE this maternity series and her pregnancy fashion is adorable!

*check out rachael's house tour over at smile and wave.. her kitchen is so cheery

*and last but not least, don't forget my new series baby's first

Have a great weekend!!

here we are in texas

We recently moved to North Richland Hills, Texas.. which is in the D/FW area. Apparently they call it the Metroplex? (I'm still learning here!)
{the new place.. we live upstairs}
To read the back story, about when we felt God's call to leave San Diego and the military, click here.

Here is a list of reasons people think we're crazy for making this move:

-we didn't move back home to Las Vegas where all of our family lives
-we don't have family out here.. I mean we barely know anyone
-we just had a baby 2 months ago
-we moved here without knowing the area.. at all
-we didn't have a place live when we got here
-we kind of just picked this place and went for it

Here is the reason I think we're not crazy for making this move:

-God is in control of it all. Even if we fall flat on our faces out here and have to crawl back home, He is still in control. Really, as long as we're seeking Him and His plan I am confident He'll take care of us. He'll provide for us. He always has. We know that the Lord has called us out of the military for a reason and a purpose. It's just a matter of trusting Him in that.

Honestly, it's still all very unknown. We've been here about 2 weeks and it's been a little overwhelming.. learning a new town, finding a new church, getting the apartment unpacked with a baby, needing social interaction but not having any friends, yet!
{what I mean by overwhelming!}
But in the midst of all that, this week I was reminded to meditate on who God is. We often are focused on what He's done and is doing. But forget to consider who He is, apart from all that He's done.

Today I'm reflecting on who He is:
For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God ~Deuteronomy 4:24
For the LORD your God is a merciful God ~Deuteronomy 4:31
Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. ~Psalms 54:4
The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. ~Psalms 116:5
I the Lord do not change. ~Malachi 3:6

Thank you Lord that today you are the same as you were yesterday. Thank you that you have a plan for my family, that you will provide and you will sustain us. Thank you for your grace every single day; every single moment. Thank you Lord that you are exactly who you say you are. Thank you that I can know it to be true. Amen.

{sleepy baby}

baby's first: yard sale

It's pretty ridiculous how much stuff we have. I mean, for the past 4 years we lived in a 2 bedroom apartment with a one car garage. I guess it was that garage that got us into so much trouble! For some reason, if you have the space it just has to be filled.

When we first moved into that apartment we only had enough stuff to fill a one bedroom, one bath apartment. It's scary how fast we filled (overflowed, actually) our new space. So when we decided we would be moving out of our 2 bedroom and half way across the country into a new place (having no idea what size it would be) we knew that we had to get rid of a lot of things (unforunately we didn't get rid of enough!).

And so our first yard sale was planned and set into action...

{these were all taken toward the end of the day.. there was so much more stuff than this!}

It was a chilly Saturday morning in San Diego. Isaac and his dad hung out off to the side with the money box while I haggled with all the early morning shoppers. Isaac did so well! I think he even had a good time (and enjoyed all the attention).
{all snuggled up in his stroller}
