235th birthday

Today, November 10, the United States Marine Corps celebrates it's 235th birthday! Happy Birthday Marines!!!

My husband has been a Marine for 8 years (I'm so incredibly proud of him and the sacrifices he's made for our nation). We've had the privilege of celebrating the Marine Corps birthday for several years. It's a tradition for each battalion to hold a Marine Corps Ball each year and we all get to dress up, eat, drink and dance. It's always so much fun!

I thought that today, in celebration, I would share some of our fun memories from the birthday balls we have attended in the past.

2003, Norfolk, VA:

2004, Norfolk, VA:
{I was sick as a dog that night}

2007, Camp Pendleton, CA:

2009: Camp Pendleton, CA:
{This is from a re-enactment of the raising of our flag on Iwo Jima. It was really moving.}

{Yes, that is the same dress I wore in 2003. Pretty impressive that it still fits, eh?}

The Marine Corps birthday isn't just a birthday. It's a 235 year old tradition. Every Marine is proud to take part in the celebration because of the rich history, honor and valour of the Marine Corps and because it takes something special to be a United States Marine. You know their slogan, "The Few, The Proud"? Believe me, there is nothing prouder than a Marine on his birthday.

Every year the Commandant and Sgt Major of the Marine Corps releases a birthday message. You can watch the 2010 message here. (It's pretty awesome)

"Freedom is not free, but the U.S. Marine Corps will pay most of your share." - Ned Dolan

Happy Birthday Marines!!

  1. I like your dress from 2007! You look like quite the babe. ;)

  2. Kinda bummed that I met the hubby AFTER he'd already finished his time in, I would LOVE to get to go to a birthday celebration. Any reason to get fancy sounds fabulous to me!!
